The Multi Mug
Project - RHINO, ILLUSTRATOR, RENDERING
Year - 2022
Think of a memory. It can be anything you wish; the only requirement is that it pertains to something near and dear to you.
Now, think of that memory and see if there is something that could be made better. It must be a product, digital or physical. Now think about how it fits within the system. You cannot simply eliminate it; you must redesign it to improve your experience.
THE MEMORY
Camping has always been an experience that I have shared with friends, family, and roommates. Limited gear, wilderness, and long-lasting memories are a time-withstanding aspect of this experience. However, the mug that I have specifically for this time has traveled with me throughout countless journeys. Various mediums (water, tea, mixed drinks, and food) have tangled their smells and taste to develop such a feeling, maybe even a cringe, each time I go to eat or drink while camping.
CMF INTENT
The goal of this redesign is to create a product for the traveler, weekend adventurer, and outdoor enthusiast. The person who tightly packs everything into their car and goes to an “unknown” location for an overnight, weekend, or multi-day trip.
They use packable cooking materials and generally only take one of each item to save space and keep organized. Not only are their items concise, but they must also be durable to last on the many adventures that they will travel on.
With this design, a system works together to provide the user with an experience where their drinks and food each have their own container, while still taking up a small amount of space in the outdoors. Similar to how the old cup would retain tastes and smells of past adventures (and food/drinks) this design will visually remind the user of their travels.
The multi mug
INTERIOR - STAINLESS STEEL
A thin layer of Stainless Steel is coated on the inside of the mug in order to create a barrier of non-porous material in order to avoid drinks leaving smells that will linger over time.
This is done through the process of Electroplating. This is where a positively charged metal plate is applied to a negatively charged part (or mug).
CMF
BOTTOM OF MUG - RUBBER
EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) Rubber is die cut to the correct size in order to fit inside the inlay molded out of the mug.
This material is used to prevent slipping when the mug is placed on a surface.
EXTERIOR - COPPER
Made from 22-gauge 100% copper sheets, the mug is formed by cutting circles out of a copper sheet, then stretching and pulling the material into the correct depth and width.
This material will dent and patina over tim,e which will allow its travels to be visibly noticed by the user.
